What is Smart Auto Retry?
Smart Auto Retry is an automated payment recovery feature available exclusively to FLiiP customers using Adyen as their payment provider. When a credit card payment fails, FLiiP automatically retries the payment on your behalf — no manual intervention required.
Powered by Adyen's intelligent Auto Rescue algorithm, Smart Auto Retry schedules retries over a configurable window and stops automatically when a payment is determined to be unrecoverable, helping you:
Maximize cash recovery — Recover more failed payments without lifting a finger
Minimize processing costs — Smart algorithm avoids unnecessary retry attempts that would never succeed
Save time — No more manually monitoring and retrying failed payments
Improve member experience — Combined with RISE, members receive helpful communication while the system works in the background
Note: This first release supports credit card payments only. SEPA direct debit support is coming soon. Support for EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) is not planned yet as retrying is more expensive.
How It Works
When a credit card payment fails, Smart Auto Retry:
Analyzes the failure reason —The algorithm determines if the payment has a chance of succeeding when retried later
Schedules intelligent retries — If the payment is recoverable (e.g., insufficient funds, temporary card issue), the system schedules retry attempts at optimal times
Stops when appropriate — If the payment will never succeed (e.g., canceled card, fraud, account closed), the system skips retries to avoid unnecessary processing fees
Who Can Use Smart Auto Retry?
Availability: Customers using Adyen as their payment provider
Payment Methods: Credit cards only
Coming Soon: SEPA direct debit support
How to Enable Smart Auto Retry
Smart Auto Retry must be enabled manually in your FLiiP settings. It is disabled by default.
Step-by-Step Setup
Navigate to Settings > Payments
Locate the Smart Auto Retry Window setting
Set the number of days for the retry window:
0 days = Smart Auto Retry is disabled
1-48 days = Smart Auto Retry is enabled with your chosen window length
Recommended: 30 days for optimal balance between recovery opportunity and processing time
Click Save
Important Notes About Enabling
Only new transactions are enrolled — When you enable Smart Auto Retry or change the window length, only transactions created AFTER the change will use the new settings
Past transactions are not enrolled — Failed payments that occurred before enabling Smart Auto Retry will NOT be automatically retried
Changes apply to future transactions only — If you increase or decrease the retry window, only new transactions will use the updated window
Example: If you enable a 14-day window on Monday, a payment that failed on Sunday (the day before) will not be enrolled in Smart Auto Retry. A payment that fails on Tuesday will be enrolled with a 14-day window.
Understanding the Transaction Detail Panel
All FLiiP customers (not just Adyen users) have access to an Transaction Detail Panel that provides complete visibility into the lifecycle of each transaction.
How to Access the Transaction Detail Panel
Go to Payments > Payment List
Click on any transaction to open the detail panel and choose "View details"
What You'll See
The Transaction Detail Panel shows:
Current transaction status — Success, Error, In Auto Retry, Sent to Collections, etc.
Payment method — Card type, last 4 digits, expiration
Amount — Transaction amount and currency
Smart Auto Retry timeline (for Adyen customers)
When Auto Retry started
When Auto Retry ended
Why it ended (e.g., "Successful Auto Retry", "Retry window expired", "Payment will never succeed")
Activity Log — Complete history of what happened to this transaction
Clickable member profile — Quick access to member details
Error code explanation — Click the refusal reason to see what it means
FAQ
Can I Still Manually Retry?
Yes! You can manually retry a payment at any time, even if it's enrolled in Smart Auto Retry.
Important: Manually retrying or updating the payment method stops the Smart Auto Retry cycle.
Bulk Payment Retry
When you use Bulk Retry, the system automatically excludes transactions currently in Auto Retry mode.
This means you can focus your manual retry efforts only where they're truly needed — on payments that aren't already being handled automatically.
How to Bulk Retry:
Go to Payments > Payment List
Filter for "Error" status
Select multiple transactions
Click Retry
Transactions in Auto Retry are automatically excluded
Auto Retry Fees
Standard transaction fees apply when a retry succeeds or fails.
How long does the retry window last?
You choose the window length when you enable Smart Auto Retry (1-48 days). We recommend 30 days for optimal results.
What happens if a member updates their payment method?
If a member updates their payment method, the Smart Auto Retry cycle stops.
Can I see which transactions are in Auto Retry?
Yes! Use the Transaction Detail Panel or filter your Payment List to see transactions currently enrolled in Smart Auto Retry.
Why would Smart Auto Retry NOT retry a payment?
Adyen's algorithm identifies payments that will never succeed (e.g., canceled card, fraud detection, account closed) and skips retry attempts to save you processing fees.
Can I turn off Smart Auto Retry for specific transactions?
Currently, Smart Auto Retry applies to all new credit card transactions for Adyen customers once enabled. You cannot selectively disable it for individual transactions.
What happens to payments that failed before I enabled Auto Retry?
They are not enrolled. Only new transactions created after enabling Smart Auto Retry are enrolled.
What happens to auto retry if the payment is sent to collection ?
It stops the auto retry cycle.
